Triazolam A drug from the Benzodiazepine group is used as a short term treatment for insomnia and other sleep related disorders. It is a CNS (central nervous system) depressant which works by retarding brain activity. While it has similar properties to other benzodazepines, such as amnesic, anxiolytic, muscle relaxant, sedative, and anticonvulsant properties, it is generally used therapeutically only for the treatment of severe insomnia, and due to it's short half life is not appropriate in patients who wake early or several times a night.[1]

[top]Introduction to Triazolam

Also known by trade names Halcion and Trilam, it possesses pharmacological properties similar to that of other benzodiazepines, but it is generally only used as a sedative to treat severe insomnia.

Triazolam has been known to exhibit a wide range of effects: Hypnotic, Sedative, Anticonvulsant, Amnesic, muscle relaxant and Anxiolytic. One of the fastest acting benzodiazepines in the group it also has one of the fastest clearance rates (1-2 hour Half-Life) making it an ideal sedative and sleep aid for air travel. These properties generally negate the morning drowsiness associated with the benzodiazepine group.
