Preparing for first home methadone detox - Part 13

  1. I am in shock, I really cannot believe what happened when I went to see the doctor tuesday.
Both my recent tests which I was absolutely convinced would come back as clear have come back as positive for heroin! How can this be? I've had 2 smokes in 6 weeks [after 20 years of daily use[ and neither were close to a test date. I am gutted, I have worked so hard at this, there must have been a mistake somewhere.

Luckily I think she realised my disbelief was genuine and has given me a second chance before throwing me off the program. When I went home and told the other half he could not understand it either, so to make sure my next test does not come back as positive as well we are living and sleeping in different parts of the house.

He is smoking upstairs with the bedroom door shut and the window open, while I live and sleep on the sofa downstairs away from the pollution zone. Also I no longer handle his gear at all to avoid any possibility of inhaling any small airborne particles.

If I have no contact with heroin what so ever and these next two tests also come back as positive, then I want some answers because I sure as hell have not smoked any myself.

If we discover my previous two positive tests are due to passive smoking, ie being in the same room as my partner while he is smoking heroin, then the tests these days are very sensitive and I would like to make others aware of this possibility.

I will let you all know how it goes but I am gutted and really depressed at the moment.

Hey Sue, sorry to hear that bad news.

Have you had any headache tablets recently? I only ask because I've had those tests come back positive before and it was the headache tablets contacting Codeine and Paracetamol that had actually shown up as heroin.
Are you taking any other medications at all?

When it happened to me I got so upset. I asked them to do a blood test or a hair test, something a bit more reliable. These days I do worry if I'm going to be tested because the tests they use are so poor.

Try not to let it get you down. You are doing so well. You can get through this setback too.

    Wishing you all the best,
    Kitts.

I've had that same thing happen to me, except I tested positive for Meth!!

The most bizarre part is that I've never had meth in my life!! The stupid Dr rang me over the coals for about 15 minutes. I was horrified, and it was an awful experience. I told him I had taken Sudafed, which was why it tested positive, and he said that everyone says that. I said I wasn't leaving until they had done a more reliable test. 3 hours later (and cleared of being a meth addict) I left. Idiots.

They know that the cheaper tests have a failure rate of about 25%. That's 1 in 4 people. I agree with Kitts, next time it happens request a blood test, or a more expensive, inclusive pee test.

I know how frustrating that is, especially when you have done so well being clean. I am glad she believed you and that you were able to stay on the program.

How are you doing outside of that? Are you doing ok with cravings and switching over to methadone? Have you met with your new counselor, and if so, did it go well?
