Not to be critical, but SWIM read the correct device for scoring the pods, would be homemade curved handle with 3 pins set at a fixed depth of between 1mm-3mm. That way cutting to deep isn't possible. SWIM has never harvested, perhaps one gets a feel for it though. The set depth device seems like it would save serious amounts of time if SWIMopsie was harvesting a large crop. A wooden paintstick from your local paint store ( you know the type with the semi circle) with three pins set would work nice for next year. BTW, SWIM has many P. Somniferum seeds and is waiting for next year. ;-)

swim has always used a razor blade. It seems to work great as long as he is carful. swim doesn't grow his own though, he discovered if he walks around the neighborhood enough people grow poppies to supply him for a few weeks :)

There are various different ways of harvesting opium, swia uses a spoon with with small needles running along and attached to the spoon then all though long and tedious task the pod is s gently tapped to allow the opium to flow. cutting too deep will stop the flow of raw opium as it seaps and covers the wound on the pod.
