    Pros
    • + Easy to read
    • + Unbiased, experience-based approach to content
    • + Covers many psychedelics
    • + Flowing writing
One of the coolest books about psychedelics I have ever read. It's somewhat old, having been published back in 2002. Daniel Pinchbeck summarizes the use of plant-based psychedelics and synthetic, modern psychedelics, and their impact on cultures dating back thousands of years up to this day.

As a Beatnik from New York City, Pinchbeck has experimented with several psychedelics, and so was inclined to report on their use from the Bwiti with Ibogaine, Ayahuasca in South America, Salvia Divinorum in Mexico...to modern day DMT and Psilocybin users.

What is interesting is his experience of actually going to Gabon, Western Africa, and consuming Ibogaine. Pinchbeck is first and foremost a writer, so it is always interesting when they take psychedelics in order to learn more about what they are writing about.

Extremely entertaining and well written book.

It's clear the author is influenced by Terence Mckenna, which I happen to like. In fact he attended one of TM's Palenque conferences. But his thoughts are original - he is very well read, and adventurous - having tried ibogaine in africa, and ayahausca in numerous places. Some great, descriptive chapters on 'Burning Man'. The book has some interesting, refreshing perspectives, some insights I have not yet considered. He tries to relate the psychedelic shamanic experience to this current day madness. For sure I will read his next book '2012: The Return of Quetzalcoatl'
