Swim is new here, but not to recovery. Swim has been a clean and sober member of AA for 23 years, but recently got stupidly addicted to Oxycontin. He has been taking 80-150mgs a day orally for about 3 months. He's deathly afraid of the withdrawals, so after a lot of research he found this site and is anxious for your advice. He would rather not use Suboxone as a maintenance drug because he doesn't want to have to withdraw from that later.

He has a great support group in AA who he's sure will circle the wagons because he has been on the other side of the same exact situation with other members of his sober community.

From his research it seems as though one can use Suboxone to withdraw from the Oxy for 7-10 days and not have to much difficulty leaving the Suboxone behind. He's hoping to have some anti depression meds like Cymbalta as well because he's pretty sure he will suffer from deep depression for a few months after getting clean. He's heard that Clonodine is helpful too, especially for that first day while waiting for the moderate withdrawals to kick in.

Please hit him with your best advice. He's open to everything.

This thread is great info for Suboxone use.

Yes one could do 7-10 day detox with subs without having a problem to leave them once you are done, they only become an issue after a bit of a longer use and the withdrawals last 2-3 weeks. From what swim has read it is wise to start suboxone use after about 2 days of going into withdrawals because if done sooner it would result in going into full and worse withdrawals as suboxone contains naloxone.

Clonodine is indeed helpful. Not sure as which antidepressant to use, but swim is put on lexapro/cipralex (and they suck).

Would be wise to get some Diazepam to help with sleep for the first few days, 1h or 2 is better than none.

    All the best

Yes, thanks for that thread. Swim remembers reading it and even commenting on it. Wow, swiy sure was hammering the Oxy.

Swim has an appointment next week with an addiction specialist doc that was recommended by a good friend of Swim's who works in a detox center. Trying to decide whether to wait for that or trying it alone. Swim can get Suboxone elsewhere. Not sure about Lyrica though. Swim does have some Zofran(Ondansetron) coming. Swim has heard of some success using it for withdrawals.
