Fairly odd drinking experience last night, quite possibly the drunkest I've been in a while but strangely enough, I was well over my limit and didn't even realise it. I couldn't remember a thing when I woke up.

I started off the night with three bottle of Bavara Brazilian beer, followed by six Corona Extra and was feeling great. Next thing I know, in comes a friend with a bottle of green Absinthe from Turkey. Thinking it was the normal 40% vol. stuff we get over here, I lashed back five shots without much difficulty. Next thing I know, someone tells me that the stuff was 70% vol. and I had totally overdone it. It was probably the first time in years that I was extremely pissed in front of my friends (most of them being relatively lightweight).

When I woke up this morning, I was told that I had broken someone's finger, gotten in two fights (nothing too serious) and that I was supposed to be drunker than I ever was. Anything like this ever happen to someone? Absinthe is deceptively strong shit.

havent done anything like that on 'sinthe but having shots when your already pissed is a sure fire way to end up in that situation. its probly best to start off with shots then move to beer.

Once your over the 20 standard drinks mark, anything is possible.

    Absinthe in shots? 40%?

Typically, quality absinthe (NOT Czech absinth...That stuff's disgusting) and noncommercial brands are 68 or 53 depending on the method of distillation or if it's an oil mix.

There are also macerates (usually Czech).

I've never had a blackout on any of these. However, I know that it's more powerful than it seems due to the speedy secondary effects to absinthe. Not everyon experiences these, though.

    Absinthe Fun

Hey all, tonight I am having a night in from the town and thought I'd experiment with absinthe that I had bought a few weeks ago from a loca specialist retailer.

It contains wormwood (as here in UK it's still quite legal) but no info on how much.

I have had 3 glasses now, about 1 part absinthe, 3 parts water.

I have been careful to eat thoughout the experiment and sip the drinks over time to avoid having the alcohol overcome the (if any) effects of supposed Thujone/wormwood.

What I can say after 3 glasses over the course of the evening is that I feel somewhat clearheaded and fresh in my mind. Maybe this is placebo, maybe it's not. I wasn't expecting open eye visuals and whatnot lol, and I was also somewhat skeptical about the effects of wormwood on the mind.

The effects feel very subtle and WOULD BE disguised if you went about doing normal friday/sat stuff.

As I have become hyper vigiliant tonight looking out for any small effects, that frame of mind in itself would have a placebo type effect on the body so be open to that fact that what I am feeling could well be psychosomatic.

I am going to continue for a few more drinks as it's only 10:30 here, maybe I shall update if I feel any noticable extras. If not I shall leave it at that.

You should pay attention to his/her perception of time. swim notices that when he takes absinthe, he seems to move and think at a normal speed, and the rest of the world has slowed down drastically. at points, he will not even notice the passage of time, and momentarily will think that he is moving around in a world where time has stopped.

even though absinthe is legal in your part of the world (lucky swiy!) please use swim/You anyway just to mantain continuity in the forum. I would enjoy hearing more of a trip report if the effects pick up.

What brand of absinthe is it? It makes a big difference.

Its not so much the wormwood that gives you the nice feelings so much as the combination of herbs that go into the absinthe.

I find that I get a nice body high from some absinthes and just get a bit delirious and confused from others.

    Hey, thanks for the info.

The product in question is Parisian Le fee Absinthe.

And a small Update, I now feel slightly tipsy, i'm one and a half glasses further and a couple of the last gulps tipped me over the edge onto my way to drunkness.

Still, i definatly do feel alot clearer headed, rather articulate, and being able to interpret thoughts more clearly.

Nothing other than that I can report though.

Honestly I have never felt any of the psychoactive effects of absinthe besides that caused by large amounts of alcohol. Not suprising since the product in question is in fact 89% alcohol.
Btw- wormwood is legal in my country as well and i wasnt aware that its a banned substance in some countries considering it really has a negligible psychoactive effect.

Ditto on that. Absinthe is just really strong alcohol that will get one very, very drunk IMO. There doesn't seem to be anything psychedelic or trippy about it from what SWIM's seen.

    I would have to disagree.

While it isn't so much a psychedelic substance, it is more mind-altering that simple alcohol.

I find he gets a body trip from some brands of absinthe, and others give him a very delirious drunkeness. He feels much more out of it than drunk.

The problem is that if you drink too much of it the drunkenness begins to overpower the mind-altering effects. Thats why the traditional way to drink absinthe is 1 part absinthe to 7 parts water and then you add some sugar. You then sip the mixture slowly. Its not supposed to be mindblowing or anything, just a trippy substance.

For a nice glowing absinthe drunk I would recommend Kubler absinthe from Switzerland (where absinthe was just legalized again). Its very nice tasting and leaves you with a nice light happy drunk feeling with a cool body high to go with it.

Also nice were some Spanish brands (they were red he thinks) that produced effects of a more psychedelic nature, as did Czech Republic brands.

    Re: Absinthe Fun

I had absinthe at his Uni bar the other day, admittedly I had already had a drink but was by no means drunk or pissed, only mildly tipsy if that, the absinthe was a double and served straight without dilution from water, without the sugar cube and was not set on fire before entering swim. I did not down this but had it in gulps over about 10 mins. 20mins or so following this I had been sipping a pint of larger and consumed no more than half, when he became aware that if he closed his eyes he could see a simple grey box rotating on the spot but changing direction. The box seemed very intriguing to SWIM.

Has any other my enjoyed an experience like that after drinking absinthe?
also can anybody suggest whether it is more likely to be the alcohol or other absinthe ingredients causing it?

It perhaps should be noticed that after drinking alcohol anything more than 2 pints, SWIM while not drunk, if he looks at a plain white wall sees light colored dots all over it, similar to taking a magnifying glass to a TV screen

Bajeda made some brand suggestions and I would be curious if anyone else had any particularly trippy experiences with absinthe and what brands are good/best.

    trippy experiences none.
Best brands : Swiss La Bleue, distributed by Alandia.
Ted Breaux's reproductions for Jade of "Nouvelle Orleans", and "verte suisse".
I'd also add the Verte de Fougerolles, Un Emile 68 and maybe a spanish brand like Deva if you're into anise.

Absinthe comes in 3 types : Verte ( green, emerauld louche) Bleue ( transparent, milky white louche), and Blanche ( transparent, no louche).
It depends on your taste, really, more or less anise, herbal taste, bitterness, bouquet.
Absinthe doesn't "get you high", but it is a delightful drink though it is now sold at an outrageous price for what it is because of the hype, and also reproduction efforts, like Ted Breaux's, which are indeed amazing.

Look up my posts on absinthe in the SE if you want a more developed opinion on the subject.

Absinth is not just high alcohol. it creates a different sort of effect to just being drunk the commercial absinth is crap and is just high alchole with anise taste. as it contains no wormwood with the absinth mix, it is a dreamy opiate weed kinda like effect with out alcohol slurring nastiness and typical drunken behavior u want proper absinth u have to by decent absinth not the commercial shit. It also depends on how u drink it as well. its not a shot taking kinda drink.

    Re: Absinthe Fun

the absinthes I've quoted have a thujone concentration similar or to pre-prohibition ones. There were tests done by the german government to assess absinthe nocivity and psychoactivity. People like Ted Breaux have sampled analysed and retro-engineered pre-prohibition absinthes...
the whole absinthe psychoactivity is a myth. And if any "difference" with other types alcohol is felt while drinking absinthe it is due to the herbal blend and the active principles of their distillated essences and not thujone, which is very ineffective orally... A similar effect can be felt with green chartreuse for instance.
Again, absinthe lore is a myth, read up here for more details :

I do agree that there are crappy brands out, especially the ones "selling" a psychoactivity or high thujone concentration, especially czech brands (people would be better off drinking mouthwash).

Absinthe was made illegal because of the morality leagues of the times (being the cheapest alcohol of the time = behind most cases of delirium tremens) and because of the pressure of the wine lobbies....not because of it's fabled psychoactivity, nor nocivity.

    i'm repeating myself again

My piece de resistance is his Absinthe, and while I agree that the psycoactive effects are moderately (homebrew stuff) to greatly (all the store bought stuff u get outside Czech and Spain) over exagerated, I think that they are still noticable. SMIM's fav drink, likened to a low dose of cacti (without quite so much nausia)....
But has You ever tryed it old style, ie wit laudanum. I have done this a couple of times the prosess being to get a lump of O (a bit hard to get laudanum nowdays) stick it on a lump of sugar, pour a shot of synth into a glass, soak th sugar in th synth, light it, place hands over glass, wait for vacume... suck in vapor, stir till all the O disolved,
    then enjoy!:D

    Re: Absinthe Fun

A few months ago I got his hands on some Absinthe, and took it to a party. SWIM cut it half and half with water and took shots of the solution. Its had a strong anisete taste to it, and i really cant sip on something like that. I didn't really notice anything special about it. But then, my sure between the alcohol content and the coke, I would have been totally oblivious to any effects of the wormwood anyhow. Never the less something like that is a rarity around here and we jokingly dubbed it "partying like its 1899"
