I've heard these two can be classified into the same drug category. If a drug screen is testing for barbiturates but NOT testing for Benzo's, and the little donkey has been taking xanax, will he test positive for barbiturates??

No. Though they are both classes of sedative drugs, they are unrelated. Barbiturates have been out of style for years and are rarely found outside of hospitals and other special use settings.

Well, there's elements of truth to this. Swim is on a barb and can think of at least 2 other people who also are (than again, swim keeps some unusual company). Both are GABAergic based depressants, though benzos will not test positive for barbs. They will reduce w/d symptoms of one another. The cat was especially surprised to find out how common barbs still are...mostly phenobarbital and butalbital.

Pharmacologically they are similar, but for testing purposes they are very different classes of chemicals.
