Pet iguana gets a ceramic pestle (as shown in pic). Every time he grinds something powder sticks in the base.

Once he tried to take it out with steel wool n the wool got in it n he became sick as crazy. Everything gets abraded by it.

Any ideas so that the end powder doesnt get additional material?

A playing card might work depending on the size of the pestle. The stiffness of it would be good for this purpose. It bends too so you can form is to the shape of the pestle. Now that you used something abrasive to get it out its going to be even harder to scrape stuff out of it due to all the scratches and micro abrasions.

Problem is that it has no scratches. The bottom is already rough n abrasive. That stuff pretty much stays they way it is regardless of what you rub on it.

He tried using a metro card n the paint starts chipping off the card. Am sure some plastic gets there too. The abrasive bottom of the lower half causes these problems.

well if its hard to scrape out of then don't use it. Use a hard table surface or something.

You can wash whats left in their out and recrystallize it to get it back. But since it has chore boy and plastic in it I would advise against it.

That isn't ceramic, it's marble. Don't use steel wool on it, you're just going to put rock dust up your nose.

Get a different mortar and pastel.

They have pill crushers available at drugstores that work on the same principle as a mortar & pestle, but are smaller, made of plastic & covered - so no bits can go flying.

Perhaps something like that would work better for your needs. They are very inexpensive.

Tried the pill crushers but it doesn't come out fine as the pestle. Think he should just stop using it.

Also need to send him to the vet. The steel wool stuff made it look gray and he felt pretty nasty after.

    Thanks though.

The sharp corner of a one-sided razor blade works well. One can get quite quick at cleaning it out after a few goes.
