So, this hobo found a handful of 80mg oxycodone with naloxone capsules. The clear capsules contain a very light blue powder (similar to the color of Mallinckrodt 30mg tabs) of oxycodone/naloxone/filler. The bum was told by another bum buddy that they were produced by a compound pharmacy. The hobo is aware of what compound pharmacies are, but does anybody know why they make this alternative? Possibly that naloxone in small quantities can help receive constipation in strong opiate therapy? Any thoughts?

On another note, this particular bum was curious to see if it was possible to smoke/snort the powder. Now, this bum had been clean for 13 days...so it stood to reason that if the naloxone was going to have an effect, that effect would just result in a bit of wasted oxycodone and a impatient wait of 3 hours until the naloxone had disappeared. That is if the naloxone even took an effect. What if the naloxone has a low boiling point (does anybody know the actual figure?)...a temperature similar to oxycodone's vaporizing point. That would mean that the naloxone gets destroyed while the oxy is fine, correct?

    thx guys

The bum was just in formed that the capsules contain 3% naloxone...not sure how accurate that is

iirc, there was talk for a while of adding either DXM or ultra low dose naltrexone (ULD naltrexone) to tablets of, say, morphine in order to stop the development of tolerance.

But if it's naloxone & not naltrexone, I'd say it's either there to help with constipation or to prevent abuse of the oxycodone via injection. Perhaps there was a compassionate doctor who knew their patient had a recent history of IV opiate abuse but was also in serious pain & had the pharmacy compound the oxy 'script with Narcan so it isn't injectable.

I couldn't tell you if the naloxone would be active via insufflation. I know it's not a big deal with Suboxone, but that's mostly because the bupe has a higher affinity for the receptors than the naloxone. As this isn't the case with oxycodone, I don't know...

Why doesn't the person in question just try taking one orally (provided they have a tolerance, of course - 80mg of oxycodone is nothing to sneeze at!)?

The naloxone shoud only be active if IV'd.

This may have been compounded to save the patient money as OP's are quite expensive without insurance.
