Coroner: Tasered man died of drug overdose

    Staff Report

    Last update: July 08, 2005

DELAND -- A 30-year-old Sanford man who died after being shot repeatedly with a Taser stun gun in March died of "acute cocaine intoxication," a medical examiner's autopsy report said Thursday.

Willie Michael Towns was struck three times with the Taser and pepper-sprayed twice in a struggle with DeLand police officers March 6, police said.

Towns ran from police, who believed he was a car burglar suspect. Police later realized Towns was not the man they sought.

Volusia County's medical examiner's office said the death was caused by "acute cocaine intoxication" and listed the manner of death as accidental, said a DeLand police press release issued Thursday.
