I have a bottle of cough syrup and wants to drink it tonight.
I have done this many of time but there are other ingreidients he hasn't seen before.

They are called : Sodium Cyclamate and Sorbitol Solution added as sweetners.
Is this dangerious to take? or can it make SWIM very sick?

inactive sweetners are nothing to worry about usually; what are the ACTIVE ingredients?

    Its only DXM.

But if you scroll down somewhere on this thread someone explains that Sorbitol is NOT RECCOMENDED.

and explaining how it can cause rectal bleeding, vomiting, etc

Is Sorbitol different than Sorbitol Solution?

I have answered his own query: Sorbitol can indeed cause so much softening of tissue as to allow bleeding to occur. Sometimes profusely. In fact, sorbitol is used as a oral lozenge for cancre-sores in the mouth. Cyclamates are banned in the USA (maybe elsewhere) after being found to cause cancer back in the late 1960's.

Sorbitol is just sugar alcohol, it is produced naturally in the body and is used as an artificial sweetener in tons of foods. People on the Atkins diet eat far more sorbitol daily than you'll find in a bottle of cough syrup, because it doesn't count towards "net carbs," so they have these candy bars. The worse thing it gives the vast majority of people is some bloating and gas. One would have to consume a truly heroic amount of cough syrup for sorbitol to have a high chance of serious side effects.

As for Sodium Cyclamate it is perfectly safe and used as an artificial sweetener around the world. It was the artificial sweetener that was implicated as carcinogenic in the late 60s, but tons of scientific research has nullified any possibility of a cancerous link.

Even as a throat lozenge, it warned not to go past a certain dosage due to the possibilty of causing bleeding - such as an ulcer that was undiagnosed. Or varicies.

If a source of DXM can be found without sorbitol, it should be persued.

Recently in the USA, cyclamates were allowed into use again - but in a limited capacity. Not like it was before the cancer-link was found. Back then it was used as a sweetener for soda and used as apartame is currently used.

Want some fun? Now thalidomide is being brought back into use - as long as it is not a pregnant person. Though it has been sold in other countries (Third World) since the ban in the USA.
