How long can cocaine be disolved in about 90% alchohol or water it before the coke is ruined ? Thanx

With water, there is only some anecdotal evidence of experimentation, though especially with tap water, there are minerals, chlorine, flourine, and more in there which could react with anything in the water. Some instability issues could also arise from adulterants which become reactive in solution.

In alcohol, who knows, probably indefinitely. The hamster knew a physician who had a small bottle of cocaine solution for many, many years. It was still quite active when the hamster's friend had to clean out the physician's office when he died and found the bottle there and evaporated the alcohol. Very nice crystals resulted, he might add.

In the hamster's opinion, the instability issue is a bit overrated as he's been known to experiment with solutions once upon a time. Never had a problem.

Thanx Wanderer - alway very informative.... What is the fastests and safest way to evaporate the alchohol? Is it heated?

Mr. Hamster would suggest a bit of UTFSE because these questions are not new.

The hamster knows that alcohol evaporates at room temperature. However, if a heat source is used, don't allow to boil, make sure the area is well ventilated, and there are no potential sources of ignition - open flame, sparks from a motor, etc...

Mr. Hamster says use a bit of common sense on this one.

Swims friend would beg to differ on its stability in water. Pure cocaine (95%+) dissolved in distilled water for 2 weeks in temperature of 80F, the vial it was contained in had never been used before and rinsed quickly with acetone. Seemed like junk when it was recovered. Doctors that use cocaine solutions make them immediately before use because of it degrading. If kept cool could probably last a few months but 80F isn't too hard of a temperature to reach.

Swims friend has also dissolved his yayo in a saline nose spray bottle. It worked great but this was winter, and it only lasted three days so who knows about any extended times in solution.

So if cocaine and alcohol make cocaethylene in the body what is to say its not going to be created in the alcohol solution? Cocaine is best to stay in its crystal form.

    Peace

If the coke gets ruined by changing forms then all these people wouldn't have any success smuggling it by saturating their clothing and other materials with it to later recover it and putting cocaine into melted platic and then get it back somehow and I imagine that hot plastic or fiberglass is a lot worse for coke than some alchohol solution.....

Mr. Hamster used to do this all the time in saline solution and ethanol. He never had a problem when he did such things.

He's requested a research paper on this be added to the archive. So, the jury is out until we can see some evidence from some controlled experiments.

Not that the hamster is doubting, but he'd like to see it backed up a bit more with an experimental study with controls and empirical evidence.

    The paper is:

STABILITY OF COCAINE IN AQUEOUS SOLUTION

    1. John B. Murray,
    2. Hasan I. Al-Shora
Article first published online: 28 JUN 2008
    DOI: 10.1111/j.1365-2710.1978.tb00096.x

Cocaethelyne is a product of an enzymatic methyl transcripterase which performs tranesterfication in vivo in the liver. Ethanol must be present in the body when this occurs. It's not something which spontaneously occurs in solution.

Medical cocaine solutions are 5-10% cocaine in alcohol. They last a very long time.

Agreed, it's best to stay in crystalline form as there would be a possibility of a reaction between any number of things which might be mixed in as adulterants. The only time one might want to use a solvent or reagent would be for cleaning or purification, then back into a solid.

wanderer added 726 Minutes and 8 Seconds later and the research is in...

While the research paper only examined cocaine solution in an opthalmic preparation, it does highlight a couple of things. It confirms that cocaine does indeed degrade in water solution. This is due to several things, the pH of the solution and the storage temperature. This was also done with distilled, sterilized water.

From the research paper: STABILITY OF COCAINE IN AQUEOUS SOLUTION (Please refer to the document for the tables indicated in the text.)

So the hamster concedes that there is degradation, but it doesn't appear to be as rapid as some critters believe, though environmental factors are a consideration. The faster degradation in water shown in anecdotal evidence could be due to several factors, the pH of the water, storage temperature, and any potential reactants in the water in the case of nondistilled unsterilized water. Ultimately, water is not that good a long term storage medium, but it's not altogether terrible if it's done under the right conditions, and a six month shelf-life is indicated as it only loses 10% concentration over that period in a solution with pH of 5.5. Although, the higher the pH, the less degradation occurs.

Now, the hamster hasn't found anything on storage in alcohol which would be the case for a topical solution, or for internal use in anesthetizing and/or cauterizing the sinuses or other topical applications where alcohol concentration is not as great a factor as it would be in the case of an opthalmic application such as a surgical procedure. The hamster would like to find some experimental data on pure alcohol as a medium and see what its conclusions are.

The hamster hopes that settles the debate regarding an aqueous solution, and helps to confirm SWIGhetto_Chem's hypothesis based on his critter's experimental observations. The hamster would also like to thank SWIGhetto_Chem's critter for bringing this subject to light and helping to explore it in a bit more detail.

    Thanx to the hamster.

Appreciate the clarification on everything. That paper was a nice read to get a more in-depth understanding of how cocaine fares in water. This will make swims foaf feel a little better next time he has some dissolved in water for whatever reason. Just gotta treat it with care, keeping it cool and light free will probably greatly reduce degrading product.

    Peace

From an experimental perspective: I work in a lab where we use cocaine on a regular basis. When we prepare cocaine for administration, dissolved either in Saline, EtOH or DMSO depending on the preparation, the cocaine is used within 48hr. Once made, the solution is kept in a 4˚C storage unit in light-free containment. Having witnessed a diminished effect in animals after only 5 days of storage, I can say with great assuredness that cocaine is not stable in solution for prolonged periods, especially at room temperature or with light exposure.

This may not be as applicable to a recreational user who may not notice a 10% degradation when consuming large amounts, but for the sake of accuracy, it should be noted that significant degradation does occur somewhat rapidly.

This had the hamster rolling on the floor. He wonders if they might be hiring...

Off topic, but couldn't resist. The other info provided by Shampoo is excellent.
