    Hunter S. Thompson

DENVER, Colorado (AP) -- Hunter S. Thompson, the acerbic counterculture writer who popularized a new form of fictional journalism in books like "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," fatally shot himself Sunday night at his Aspen-area home, his son said. He was 67.

"Hunter prized his privacy and we ask that his friends and admirers respect that privacy as well as that of his family," Juan Thompson said in a statement released to the Aspen Daily News.

Pitkin County Sheriff Bob Braudis, a personal friend of Thompson, confirmed the death to the News. Sheriff's officials did not return calls to The Associated Press late Sunday.

Juan Thompson found his father's body. Thompson's wife, Anita, was not home at the time.

Besides the 1972 drug-hazed classic about Thompson's visit to Las Vegas, he also wrote "Fear and Loathing: On the Campaign Trail '72." The central character in those wild, sprawling satires was "Dr. Thompson," a snarling, drug- and alcohol-crazed observer and participant.

Thompson is credited with pioneering New Journalism -- or, as he dubbed it, "gonzo journalism" -- in which the writer made himself an essential component of the story. Much of his earliest work appeared in Rolling Stone magazine.

"Fiction is based on reality unless you're a fairy-tale artist," Thompson told the AP in 2003. "You have to get your knowledge of life from somewhere. You have to know the material you're writing about before you alter it."

An acute observer of the decadence and depravity in American life, Thompson also wrote such collections "Generation of Swine" and "Songs of the Doomed." His first ever novel, "The Rum Diary," written in 1959, was first published in 1998.

Thompson was a counterculture icon at the height of the Watergate era, and Richard Nixon once said he represented "that dark, venal, and incurably violent side of the American character."

Thompson also was the model for Gary Trudeau's balding "Uncle Duke" in the comic strip "Doonesbury" and was portrayed on screen by Johnny Depp in a film adaptation of "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas."

Other books include "The Great Shark Hunt," "Hell's Angels" and "The Proud Highway." His most recent effort was "Hey Rube: Blood Sport, the Bush Doctrine, and the Downward Spiral of Dumbness."

His compound in Woody Creek, not far from Aspen, was almost as legendary as Thompson. He prized peacocks and weapons; in 2000, he accidentally shot and slightly wounded his assistant, Deborah Fuller, trying to chase a bear off his property.Edited by: BA

OH MY GOD! I DIDN'T BELIEVE YOU BUT I JUST LOOKED IT UP AND ITS
TRUE!.........jesus christ this is completely fucked, I mean I didn't
know the guy but as an aspiring writer and a fan of his work I admired
him to no end, as do so many here at this forum......it seems that the
most talented and creative in this world tend to fall victim to
    themselves.

Hunter where ever you are I hope you doing better than you were when you were here...RIP...

Apparently his ashes are going to be blasted out of a cannon, how fitting.

For you HST fans that haven't yet heard, "The Rum Diary" is being made into a movie. I don't think a release date has been set but IMDB.com has it listed as "in production". Johhny Depp and Benicio Del Toro are both in it; Johhny as Thompson (of course) and Benicio as Sala.

They don't even have a script yet for the movie, sadly I don't think this movie will ever get made.

man guys....how else would one expect the perfect intelligent madman to leave this horrid world? By longterm internal illness, strapped to a bed with tubes out of every orfice.....hell fucking NO!

Hunter was fighter, and a liver. He had spent the last several months of his life with friends and family. His son Juan, daughter in law, and grandchild were in his fortified compound...basically an awsome house, and he was on the phone with his wife when he died. He was in pain from surgerys in the near past which may have helped his desicion to end his life. His desicion.

The plan i heard was to blast his remains out of a cannon because of his fondness of guns. I think it would be fitting... that man could cause explosions.

Hunter S Thompson left this sad mad world while still riding the topof his own wave, he decided toleave before the crest broke and all rolled back...RIP Hunter S Thompson. From both a lifelonga fan, and fellow writer. The changes you made have changed my life, and the world in which you inhabited. Have fun in the next life...wherever you shall be....[IMG]

There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. Some kind of high powered mutant never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die..."

Yeah a movie will be made, Depp and Benicio have already signed on
which means money has already exchanged hands (1/3 upfront, 1/3 during
production, 1/3 after production) bsides that I read that the film IS
under production and already has a director and a script...though I may
be wrong...either way I hope its made cause Depp does an awesome Hunter

On a side note did anyone ever see Bill Murray in Where the Buffalos Roam, he plays Hunter and its terrible...

I thought Bill Murray did a pretty good job, but when you compare it to Depp's its tough to look good. I also thing the budget and directing/script for Where the Buffalo Roam wouldn't be much help.

ya if that "rum diary" comes out that would be sweet. I saw where the buffalo roam, wow did it suck. Bill Murray actually did a great job acting as Thompson, its too bad it was so boring. There was actually no drug use even shown in the movie. Fear and loathing in vegas is uncomparably better than where the buffalo roam.
