When tobacco was brought back to Spain from America, no one there had ever witnessed a person smoking. The man that first "lit up" was killed by a mob. They thought he was possessed by demons.

My college teacher in "The History of Western Civilization" told me that.

I have heard the same thing. I think by that time, john rolph had learned how to cure tobacco for trading, but it had not caught on in Europe. I think tobacco was also made illegal in some societies of the time.

Tobacco was a sacred plant in America back in those days, not a daily
habit. It was something special to be used every now and again in
    rituals.

The Europeans, and their descendants in the New World, corrupted the
whole thing, and made a good thing an evil and deadly thing.
