Hi, I was wondering if any SWIYs had experience using xanax while taking citalopram.

SWIM just started taking the citalopram for social and generalized anxiety, today was day 6 of taking 10mg, tomorrow SWIM starts 20 mg a day for 2 weeks.

SWIM just acquired some xanax, in which he hasn't taken in at least 6 weeks, and wants to use them purely for recreational purposes.

SWIM has done some research on this himself, but could not find much useful information, only that there could be interactions and that the SSRI could cause a greater build up of the benzo in SWIM's system.

Any information on this combination, mainly if it's safe, would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Should not be anything wrong with mixing the two. Do bare in mind that after you stop taking the XANAX after even a short period of time, there my be some rebound anxiety.

So if you are taking citalopram for anxiety issues in the first place, just be warend that even taking xanax for a short period of time and then stopping can make you more anxios than you were before.

in swiy's current situation i would adivse you not to take for more than 3 days in a row to avoid any major increase in anxiety when stopping.

Please be carefull with unprescribed benzos, especialy if swiy has anxiety disorders in the first place. Becase at the end of the day they will only make you worse once you have none left...

If you are prescribed them and have a solid regime worked out by a profesional then the above advise is not valid.

I say again, if you suffer already with anxiety dont get too deep with benzodiapines that you are not prescribed. Will do more harm than good.

As SWItk mentioned, please be careful with recreational use of benzodiazepines. Tolerance and dependence can really sneak up on someone. With constant use a rebound effect following abstinence can be very unpleasant and in severe cases of abuse it can be dangerous given that it can mimic alcohol withdrawal with increased levels of glutamate, norepinephrine, epinephrine, and dopamine (also known as adrenergic storm) leading to symptoms of mania, suicidality, hypertension and even possibly seizures and death. SWIM isn't saying SWIY will become addicted and die if they use benzodiazepines recreationally, they just want to make sure SWIY is aware of the risks.

Citalopram and benzodiazepines can safely be combined. It's not uncommon for psychiatrists to resort to combinations of the two for treating anxiety, although benzodiazepines are commonly viewed as a temporary treatment that shouldn't become a lasting one. By inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin, citalopram allows the serotonin to bind to it's receptors, which in turn promotes upregulation of GABA which is what benzodiazepines facilitate the release and binding of. So taking a benzodiazepine with citalopram will cause a stronger decrease in anxiety overall.

    Hope this helps. :)

Thanks a lot SWIYs, I appreciate the responses. Glad to see that SWIM can take the alprazolam while on the SSRI.

SWIM also appreciates the advice about the addictive nature of benzos. Luckily SWIM has had a decent amount of experience with benzos in the past and knows the dangers of this drug in both recreational and medicinal use. SWIM plans on only using the alprazolam for one day at a time with at least a few day break in between, since he has gone down the road of using it many days consecutively in the past and how quickly that can get out of control.

To the above poster, SWIM advises that since both of those drugs are benzos, combining them will only make the effects stronger, and shouldn't be harmful as long as dosage is highly monitored. Make sure you know your tolerance and what you can handle, and look up the half-lives and recommended dosages for each benzo before making your decision about dosage.

    Thanks again for the help!

A few years ago, SWIM was prescribed citalopram 20mg/day and Xanax (to be taken as required). SWIM had no noticable side effects. citalopram use lasted around 6 months, xanax for 18 months. no drawbacks to mention, only positive's from xanax (almost instant relief from GAD). no withdrawl that SWIM can remember. Although xanax use did increase after only a month or so. SWIM could possibly attribute this to tolerance, but doctor was understanding on this issue.

In hindsight, SWIM thinks his doctor should have given more information about benzo use and limited the prescription (100's prescribed at a time) as SWIM feels that xanax 'masks' the underlying problems instead of addressing the real issues. However, different countries have different guildlines. If SWIM was to give any anecdotal/personal advice it would be to avoid xanax completely (and yes SWIM know's it's sooo tempting to use it)

Short answer: SWIM had no problems mixing the two, but would advise researching into non benzo solutions.

    Apologies for rambling
