MIAMI (Reuters) - An explosion set fire to a Miami house being used to grow marijuana hydroponically on Wednesday and the force of the blast sent the occupant flying into the yard, police said.

The man, identified by police as Edel Mesa, 40, was badly burned on the chest, arms and legs and was in critical condition at a trauma hospital, investigators said.

"The house was pretty much destroyed," said Miami-Dade Police Detective Carlos Maura.

Firefighters extinguished the flames and called police, who seized more than 40 marijuana plants from the home, police said.

Arson investigators were trying to determine the cause of the explosion, but police said the man may have been using propane gas near the high-intensity lamps used to grow the plants indoors.

Police said Mesa was not immediately charged with a crime because of his injuries.

LOL, Usually hear of these accedents from Clandestine Labs, rather than a growing type of lab.[especially weed]. Besides, ^^ why the hell would propane be used?[weird]

Could possibly have been running a generator indoors (dumb) to avoid being detected due to high electricity usage.

Yet another needless casualty of the WoD.

Most uses with propane in an un-needed inviornment is risky. Especcially for a generator^^

Florida Blaze Blamed on Pot Chemicals

One man was critically injured Tuesday morning in an explosion at a home on the corner of Southwest 34th Street and 102nd Avenue in Westchester.

A witness told NBC 6's Steve Litz that she heard a loud boom and a few minutes later she saw fire in the home's back yard.

The blast sent 40-year-old Abel Mesa, the home's owner, into the backyard. He was airlifted to the burn unit at Jackson Memorial Hospital with severe burns.

Investigators at the scene initially thought the blast was likely caused by a gas explosion. But a few hours later, they began pulling pot plants out of the home.

"Due to the chemicals that they use and the amount of power, it can be very dangerous," said Miami-Dade Police Spokesman Carlos Maura.

Neighbor Thomas Luzuriaga told NBC 6 he was surprised to hear the news. "It's a quiet neighborhood," he said

"I got real scared because I didn't know what it was," Kevin Gutierrez, an area resident, said. "I thought a bomb exploded or something. We came over to the house and saw all the flames."

Police officers found a second person a few blocks away from the home who also had minor injuries. Officers were questioning that person.

From Chopper 6 overhead, it appeared that at least one-third of the home's roof had collapsed. The flames spread to a tiki hut in the backyard.

"While fighting this fire, the carport roof collapsed behind fire crews, leaving a narrow escape route," said Lt. Elkin Sierra of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue. "So far, we have a total of two injuries -- one critical. No firefighters were injured."

Investigators said residents reported a strong smell of propane gas before the explosion. The investigation continues.

"We can't say accurately how it exploded, but a witness did say he smelled propane prior to the explosion," Sierra said. "We are not sure if there was a gas leak or a separate propane thing."

    No firefighters were injured.

Oh god. Reminds of me years ago in my hometown. My high school teacher appeared in the paper, being that the reporter was confused on the address of a home grow op. Anyways, back on topic, the person running the grow up was actually his neighbour, or he has some really good lawyers. The person was using propane to run a generator, the catch being he had twenty some odd 20Lb. propane tanks mostly dating back to 20 years old. Needless to say the explosion shook most of the neighbour hood.

Why the hell do they call it a pot lab anyway? Like cannabis plants are produced in a lab, instead of a nursery. Do you think this is for the purpose of abstraction?

Stupid cases like these, make people believe there just as bad as meth labs or w/e.

When in fact it's just the idiot who is running the gardens fault and not the garden itself. But they usually always over look this, to mislead people. Adding in "Hydroponically produced with "dangerous" chemicals" even know just about everything found in a garage has a POSION label while the hydroponic chemicals dont because most time there environmentally safe.

This isn't beyond the realm of possibility, but reading stuff like this you have to wonder: how many of these stories are government-planted hokum designed to entrench hatred for all drugs [praise be! except alcohol and tobacco, the top killahs!] [and anything manufactured by pfizer!] in the mind of the american proles.

And then another part of me wonders: how long will it be before I'm as paranoid as Nagognog2? :)

    First paragraph:

So the blast was caused by the terribly unstable and explosive foliage? Just because they find weed then, all of a sudden, it *isn't* a gas explosion? Huh?

    Second paragraph:

Chemicals and large amounts of "power" - holy shit, these scumbag drug scientists have *power*, tell your friends, tell your neighbours, tell your congressman!

I wonder if there isn't a hinting of someone trying to connect weed growers with people who use garden fertilizers and "power"(tm) to create slightly bigger explosions?

    Distortion of truth through association.

hmm I thought that was butane not propane. Are they similar enough to be used for an extraction?

hmm maybe we should write to the dea demanding electricity/propane be controlled substances?if we cut off the flow of electricity/gas then we stop the ileagle drug trade!!

yes propane/butane are very similar but swims not sure if theyed work the same in an extract, been wondering a while about it though.

Considering that propane used for fuel is tagged with ethanethiol (ethyl mercaptan) to make it stink like natural gas - as it's also added to - if this guy was trying to use propane to make honey-oil the oil would literally smell like a skunk. And he would also win the prize on World's Stupidest People.

He was most likely using the propane for generators to run halides. If he had those (generators) running indoors, he was begging to drop dead from carbon monoxide poisoning.
