I always get extremely painful stomach aches when I drink cider, even a mouthful swallowed quickly will set them off. This doesn't happen with any other alcoholic drink, and it's really annoying because I love the taste. :-

    Any thoughts?

This is just a theory but my cat believes that cider is slightly acidic whereas most alcoholic beverages are basic. Again this is based on a very limited understanding of chemistry. Perhaps taking a tums would cure your friends problems.

Also, as a general safety rule here in the forums we don't usually talk about ourselves even when we speak of drugs that may be legal in our country. Just make sure its clear that your friend drinks cider and not you yourself. It's just a precaution. For instance I'm here to discuss my cat's drug problems. Personally, I think marijuana and all other drugs are deplorable but I've learned a bit about them in trying to dissuade my cat.

Welcome to the forums by the way.

Oh, actually my cat just told me that as a youngling he and his friends used to consume hot dog rolls to coat their stomachs. Don't know if this would help in your friends case.

I've had stomach aches from certain types of apple juice. I usualy have to buy the low-acid stuff. There's nothing wrong with my stomach generally so i guess apple juice is more acidy than most other drinks or somehtin. Either way an antacid would probably help. Try to take it a little while beforehand and probably redose after a few hours of drinking.

    Peace

If the Cat of the dreamer would be right your friend should also have problems with drinking or eating other things of an high acidy. so have you ever noticed this problem after eating a salad with vinegar, or drinking orange or apple juice?
If this is so, here in Germany you can buy base powder in healthfoodstores or pharmacies. A friend of mine is taking this stuff every day and he feels quite better, and his stomach doesn't ache anymore.

Chaton that is a wonderful idea. Do other things effect Swim; if not its the alcohol itself.

We have Tums in the states that are small pills serving a similar purpose. I don't know if you have them in Germany or England. But they neutralize acidity and are only mildly basic themselves; not quite as strong though.

Sodium Bicarbonate works as well. Just half a teaspoon in a bit of water, drink it (tastes weird, but manageable) and then the surplus acid will be neutralised into water, salt and CO2 (e.g. a burp).

Ah I have another idea. It could also be the carbonic acid, which lets your friend's stomach ache. so your friend should have the same problems with drinking coke, or sparkling water. In this case, there is the same recommendation from me.

Possibly but Swim's got no issues with OJ or any other highly acidic drinks.

He should try the tums anyways. My cat's stomach seems more sensitive to some acids than others. Don't know why. I don't think it's just a straight shot from something's pH to how much its going to hurt when you swallow it. Plus, the other things in his stomach might be effecting him (like alcohol for instance). Try the tums and if it still hurts post again and we'll keep trying.

My sister has the same problem, has been to hospital a few times because of the intense pain she has been in because of apple products.

Doctors answer was it was an allergic reaction to apples.

It's the acidic nature of Cider, get over it.

Watch out for cheap so-called "white cider" (shite cider), all the sulphites and preservatives and so forth make for a nasty reaction with the gut in some people. Like me, lol.

Apple-juice, as well as cider, is well-known for dumping the contents of the stomach into the intestines. As such it's a good cure for constipation. However this can cause discomfort (stomach-ache) in many people. This is the likely cause of the malady.

Also, if you ate too much pizza or something and your stomach hurts, if you drink apple-juice or cider - you can get the food to expedite it's journey. Probably not the best idea for getting all the nutrition available, but good if you pigged-out at an all-you-can-stuff buffet.

You are a wise man Panthers. Would you consider yourself more of a 'mad scientist' or an 'evil genius?'
