last night i went to a rave, and i bought what i was told was molly, in a capsule, which i never see anymore. i got a call from a friend who was frying balls saying don't take it, it's meth.
i know they're close together in effects, so what's the difference between the two?

SWIM thinks meth is a very speedy experiance (hence the name). MDMA is more of a lovely, slightly energetic experiance. MDMA is far better in SWIMS opion and METH is junk.
When smim has a pill with mdma and meth as long as the meth has its effect he dances like a robot with a defect and feels wired. Then when that junk finaly wears off he has a good time dancing very "flowy" and having nice chats.

    Also: meth is more addictive.

Let me just make it clear that the word "molly" does not mean anything. When buying "MDMA" off the street, the only way to know if it actually contains MDMA is to use a testing kit or test it via some sort of analysis technique e.g. GC/MS (Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectometry). Just because a street dealer says he is giving you "molly" does not mean it is actually MDMA. In addition, "Molly" does not indicate purity. "Molly" usually comes in the form of a white powder/crystal--there are literally thousands of white powders with which it could be adulterated or replaced. It is just a label used by dealers to sell their "product", which could be anything from baking soda to ground PVC pipe.

Anyway, disregarding the fact that "molly" means nothing, most people attribute the name to powdered or crystalline MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine). This is a "totally" different drug than methamphetamine. As you can see from the name, they do have a similar molecular structure:
    methamphetamine

    3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine

The only difference is the methylenedioxy group (the pentagon shaped part with the O's). But that is rather irrelevant to this discussion.

Although they have incredibly similar structures, their physiological, psychological, and psychopharmacological profiles are different. MDMA produces in the user feelings of euphoria, empathy, openness, and love. It's primary mechanism of action is binding to serotonin transporters (and to a lesser extent dopamine and norepinephrine transporters) and causing them to work in reverse, effectively dumping serotonin into the synapse and keeping it there. Serotonin is the neurotransmitter responsible for the regulation of mood, appetite, sleep, and muscle contraction among many others.

Methamphetamine works via a similar mechanism, however the difference is that methamphetamine has a much higher affinity for dopamine and norepinephrine transporters relative to serotonin transporters. Methamphetamine produces in the user feelings of euphoria, self-confidence, alertness, concentration, sociability, etc.

Methamphetamine and MDMA do have similar profiles. Both produce intense euphoria, but whereas methamphetamine involves dopamine, its euphoria is more characterized by physical euphoria and stimulation, and MDMA's euphoria is more of a psychological (but also physical) euphoria which is characterized by empathy and openness rather than the more crude stimulation associated with methamphetamine.

They are not black and white. Many of the effects of methamphetamine and MDMA are suprisingly similar, and novice users can sometimes mistake one for the other, but after experiencing both the differences are obvious.

Relative to your question is the fact that methamphetamine is sometimes used to adulterate MDMA, in part because its effects are so similar. Ecstasy dealers attempt to create phony MDMA with a combination of drugs which produce feelings similar to MDMA so that they can make more money. Because methamphetamine is so similar to MDMA, and induces euphoria and stimulation (two of the primary MDMA effects), unfortunately it is a "good choice". That is why a testing kit is necessary so that the contents of a pill/powder can be elucidated.

    Hopefully this helps.
