    HI There

MY dentist prescribed me 10 mg of valium prior to my procedure and amazingly in all my years have never taken any.

MY question is how does a 10 mg valium compare to say 1 or 2mg or xanax? I also discovered that valium is a muscle relaxant and a benzo is that true? so what should I expect when I take it? Also how much should I take if I normally take around 1mg of xanax?

will it be like xanax plus a muscle relaxation of some type?

    any info is greatly appreciated

    Have a great day!

    -Mike

10 mg Valium is equivalent to .5 mg xanax, Valium is a muscle relaxant and hypnotic on top of the anxiety fix and lasts much longer, not including the very long half life. This stuff is awesome and since u only got script from dentist you don't have to worry about dependence. Unless u have an outside source have fun, they feel awesome

Valium > benzo's is what I say. Valium is very fun, however blacking out can occur on valium, I'm not sure of the dosage required, be safe and have fun. To anyone interested in valium, try a normal dose, than up it about 2.5mg with each dose. Valium is really potent, and AFAF did black out on 20mg of valium.

Whether you have a script or not does not mean you do or do not have to worry about dependence. If you take an addictive substance on a regular basis there is a good chance you will become dependent. All a prescription from a doctor means is that your drugs are legally obtained. Doctors are well known for stopping prescriptions because they have been given a talking to by the government for prescribing too many addictive drugs, such as oxycontin. Having a prescription stopped for this reason is distressing, and i firmly believe and have seen that doctors will always put their career before an addict or a patient wanting drugs. I work with a doctor who recently stopped a benzo script to a young lad because he was clearly dependent on them. The doctor said he believed the customer had been buying more pills even though he did not try to prove this scientifically. The kid then went on to try and commit suicide two days later. The best thing to do is be careful with drugs that can create dependency and not become addicted in the first place, whether they are prescribed or not. Look after your health and do not assume a doctor will keep renewing your prescription because as i have found out, doctors can and will cut you loose whenever they feel there is a need for it, justified or not. Just hope you are offered an alternative to wean yourself off if you do become dependent, but its best to not become dependent at all. Benzodiazepine withdrawal can kill you if it is not done properly.
Take care, and always be sensible.

Unless he goes to the dentist every month for the rest of his life, I don't see any risk of dependence. If u do like them don't go doctor shopping. he most likely will know right off the bat what your doing when you ask for Valium. Either way Valium is almost never given by regular doctors, it's more a specialist kind of drug.

Taking 10mg of Valium will feel a lot like taking 0.5-1mg of Xanax, except it will last much longer, and the effects may not be as pronounced. Both are benzodiazepines and have pretty much the same effects. Most benzos have a muscle relaxant effect, both Valium and Xanax do, that's why they're often used in the treatment of seizures and muscle cramps, often in joint dislocations and tendon tears in conjunction with a painkiller.

If you already take Xanax, I don't see why you need Valium too? Is there a particular reason? There's very little difference between benzos apart from from the strength, and Xanax is much stronger, thus making Valium pretty useless from your point of view. Personally, I feel that Diazepam(Valium) is inferior to Alprazolam(Xanax) and if I had the choice I would take the Xanax.

Having said that, if you think Valium is working better for you, I don't see why your doctor would be reluctant to prescribe you it, rather than Xanax, as it much weaker and if your script is very limited, virtually unabusable.

Xanax is used primarily to treat panic attacks. It has a fast onset and a very short half life. Valium has muscle relaxant, hypnotic, anti-anxiety and anti-convulsive properties and has a very long half life. They are both benzos but still two different drugs that serve different purposes. mg for mg Xanax is more potent but that doesn't necessarily make it the better choice.

Also, to say Xanax or Valium is not abusable just because the script is limited, or that "regular doctors' rarely prescribe it, is down right incorrect and perpetuates ignorance.

Xanax = short term treatment of panic attacks/bouts of anxiety

Valium = short term treatment of anxiety, epilepsy, muscle pain or disorders AND panic attacks. as well as for many other purposes.

I don't have much experience with Xanax but I do have experience with Valium so here's my comparison of the two. When I took Xanax, it made me way too tired and made me feel way too high which is why I didn't like it (at the time... I'm sure if I took it now, I'd welcome the high because some days, I miss being high but I AM enjoying the sober life). Sorry, got off-topic. Anyway, I like Valium because it has a long half-life and it makes it so that I don't have to dose during the day. It makes me calm but doesn't give me a high which, at this point in my sober life, I'm trying not to get.

So it all depends. If you're searching for a high and/or a quick-fix for panic or anxiety attacks, Xanax is good for that. But, if you want long-term anxiety relief, Valium is best for that.

Xanax/Alprazolam treats for panic attacks, that's it. It's very potent, kicks in quick and leaves your body fast.

Valium/Diazepam treats generalised anxiety, controls seizures, treats or alleviates muscle based pain and is also used a sleep aid. It's onset is slow and stays in your system for days.

They are different benzos for different purposes.

From my experience 1mg Xanax was about as strong as 5mg Valium, so 2mg Xanax ~= 10mg Valium. Although sometimes it would take 10mg Valium to feel like 1mg Xanax.

With any benzo you can OD and black out / wreck your car / fight the police / go batshit crazy.

And to the post above, Valium IS a benzo. It is the benzo, diazepam. Personally I like Alprazolam(Xanax) best, but diazepam (to me) is like the mother of all benzos (as in Xanax is the sexy daughter of Valium)

Ummm yes I know Diazepam is a benzo. Don't know why you thought I implied it wasn't lol. Of course it is. I just said Xanax and Valium are normally used for different purposes.

This thread has gone so off topic and it is kind of funny because just about all of you responding misunderstood the OP. This entire thread is based around having a prescription of Valium.

He was prescribed 10mg of valium to take prior to his dental procesure. Akin to how sometimes you are given N2O. It is not something you have beyond the procedure. Dentists often give patients a 1 time dose of drugs to use before they make their visit if it is a procedure that may be lengthy/uncomfortable, or if you are nervous and request. Sometimes doctors themselves suggest the drug to take for the first reasons I gave. They often also for these reasons request that someone drives you/requires someone drives you.

He had/has no risk of abusing a Valium prescription as he was not speaking about a long term one, but a single dose/day use one. Which takes the awkwardness out of the thought that he regularly takes Xanax and has a script to Valium. I assume he means he frequently uses Xanax and was just unfamiliar when the doctor office instructed him to probably take Valium before the procedure.

Just thought I would drop in and say...

Valium is way way safer to come off of then any other benzo unless you are eating abusing the crap out of them. no siezers on 2 -3 days/7/10 days like xanax, klonapin, etc. I do not agree with the 10 mg to .5 or 1 mg of xanax though. HOWEVER, if you take xanax on the reg.... u will not experience the true "Sitting in a warm glass of milk sucking on your thumb while your mother rubs your head" feeling.
Swim has been taking benzoes since the 70s both prescribed and "as needed" With an exception of some of the really nasty benzos they had in the 70s, that they do not even allow in this country anymore (no I am not talking about roofies (( not even a benzo)) but things like Halcion....Valium has got to be the most relaxing benzo I have ever taken... hands down beating xanax by a mile. Xanax has a nasty punch and knocks you on your ass but valium puts you in the special place where xanax will eat your panic... but side effect you into the ground and you could forget the experience.. Be EVER so carefull with valium. Someone mentioned blackouts True. another nasty thing about valium.. for some reason if you drink and take valium and hit your head... you can die if not end up with short term amnesia or go coma for days on end. Very dangerous to mix with certain drugs and drinking. ESP narco family methadone, heroin, oxycodone. FETANYL NO NO!!! ABSOLUTE DEATH!!! sorry so long but i wanted to school you.

jermz'nCT added 4 Minutes and 37 Seconds later...

Oh..one other thing... valium is one of those drugs that Brand name is WAY better then generic. MOst drugs you cant tell or tell slightly... valium big diff so... if you ever have the option.. "Doc can you write brand medically necessary? I dont like generic"

yes this topic went of the rails.Xanax is equivalent to 1mg-10mg val.
But if OP hasnt taken any ever and got prescribed 10mg pill, well you can expect slight relaxation that's about it.since valium is long lasting its almost impossible to feel when it kicks in,nor when it starts to wear off, also because of long half life one has to use it for couple days at least for the build up in the system.
Otherwise there's nothing to hype about 10mg pill, even if its used first time.Ans if OP has experience with xanax effects might not be felt at all.

From original question: VALIUM compared to XANAX
MY dentist prescribed me 10 mg of valium prior to my procedure and amazingly in all my years have never taken any.MY question is how does a 10 mg valium compare to say 1 or 2mg or xanax? I also discovered that valium is a muscle relaxant and a benzo is that true? so what should I expect when I take it? Also how much should I take if I normally take around 1mg of xanax? will it be like xanax plus a muscle relaxation of some type?

Original question revisted: [1] i have found that 10mg valium = about 1mg xanax
[2] xanax is more for an anxiety situation where you need to stay in contorl and alert
[3] valium also reduces anxiety and is good when you need to feel partly sedated, so much more ideal for a dentist vist
[4] i find 10mg valium is too low to be sedating enough and would need to take 20mg or more, up to 30mg, for things like extractions or the intensive teeth cleaning
[5] my current dentist prefers Temazepam (comes as Restoril or Normison) 20mg for minor procedures, up to 40mg for major procedures, as it is more hypnotic, sedative, relaxing and has a short half life so you can get home again (by taxi) after the procedure - valium lasts too long and can be in your system all day

I must say again from my experiences over the past 30 years: valium is much much safer then xanax. Xanax is a very dangerous benzo.
" xanax is more for an anxiety situation where you need to stay in contorl and alert" I completely dissagree with this statement and my jaw hit the floor when i read it. Keep in mind that we are not doctors and you should scrutinize anything you read here.
I have taken mass amounts of valium and not blacked out or forgotten days on end of my life. NO benzo will sedate you and keep you in control and alert!
