would like to know for if hydrocodone levels can be detected in an oral swab. I had a surprise oral swab a few weeks ago and had taken some vicodin about 2 hours beforehand. did swim screw themselves out of a job? and is there any defense I could use if the levels are to high?

No, since hydrocodone is legal they dont test for it. when SWIM was tested for illegal substances when he od'd at the hopital it tested negative for opiates.

usually only codeine, morphine, and heroin are tested for, using the most common and inexpensive tests. perhaps more complex tests could detect hydrocodone, but its doubtful they'll be used.

The most common drug test is the NIDA 5. It tests for 5 specific classes of drug groups - it does not test for specific drugs. The NIDA 5 checks for:
    1. Cannabinoids (e.g., marijuana, hashish)
    2. Cocaine (e.g., cocaine, crack)
    3. Amphetamines (e.g., amphetamines, methamphetamine, MDMA)
    4. Opiates (e.g., heroin, opium, codeine, morphine)
    5. Phencyclidine (e.g., PCP)
Most employers stick to the NIDA 5 b/c it's cheap & easy. The NIDA 5 does not check for most synthetic & semisynthetic opioids. Hydrocodone is a semisynthetic opioid & therefore probably won't show up on yous drug test.

However, many employers are now using enhanced drug testing to check for specific substances. These tests do test for the more common synthetic & semisynthetic pain killers (e.g., Oxycodone, Oxymorphone, Hydrocodone, Hydromorphone), benzodiazepines (e.g., Valium, Xanax, Klonopin, Restoril) and barbiturates. Rarely (but more frequently if there is suspicion of drug use), employers are beginning to test for other substances as well (e.g. Meperidine, Fentanyl, Propoxyphene, Methadone, LSD, Psilocybin, Mescaline, GHB, Ketamine).

Employers are now also performing more quantitative drug testing to check for amount & frequency of use (e.g., hair testing), & discriminative drug testing to check identify or distinguish among the specific classes of NIDA 5 drugs (e.g., to between methamphetamine and MDMA &/or other amphetamine analogs).

swim can vouch for the fact that hydrocodone does NOT show up on a nida 5 test. he knew a lab rat who took it about 12 hours before a nida 5 test, and passed with flying colors.

swim can vouch from personal experience that hydro and benzos do NOT show up on the standard drug test. I has never had a nida 5 though.

so if they do do a more enhanced test and find hydrocodone can they detect the levels on a saliva swab?

If its a swab test its usually a five panel drug test. They have 7 and 10 panels for more specific drugs. Most major companies use the 10 panel UA test.
