I've learnt a lot this week and we all hear about what to do but there are things that aren't covered in manuals written by doctors and there are things to be aware of not doing as well. Hoping others will add to it with their experiences.

So, here's what my friend poppy has learned over the last 12 or so years of on off opiate use:

    1. Do not take suboxone or subutex until at least 72 hours of no methadone or you will regret it, burn this into your memory.
    2. Do not switch until your dose of methadone is well under any 'guideline' doses, gotta be at least 5mg or less.
    3. Don't drink coffee or caffeinated drinks
    4. Don't eat excessively sugary or fatty things, give your liver a break.
    5. Don't leave things to the last minute, stock up on food, meds and entertainment.
    6. In her opinion, avoid alcohol (hanging out with a hangover is the bowels of hell) and stimulants.
    7. Approach weed with caution if you don't have any relaxants and you have had anxiety while smoking it before.
    8. Do not let your Doctor give you the brush off and leave without getting what you need, change doc's if need be.
    9. Do not check out the opiates forum.

Some good ones there, maybe also

    10. Don't sit around feeling sorry for yourself, makes it 10 times worse

    11. Don't kid yourself that you can still hang out with your "drug friends" and not relapse

    12. Don't give up :)

    13. Don't inject buprenorphine unless you absolutely LOVE precipitated withdrawals. My monkey learnt that one the hard way.. ;shudders:

When I am going cold turkey he even avoiods cigarrettes the first days which he usually loves. But when going through Withdrawals they just taste horrible and his pulse also goes up so much that he can actually hear his heart pounding.

    1. Dont eat more than the stomach can handle in effort to "feel" better.

    2. If you work out keep it to about 50-75% normal as going all out can add to the muscle aches.

And Swim definately has to agree with the one about NOT going to the opiate forum. This actually is what has gotten swim to relapse. Its bad when you go in there and there is all this opiate glorification and brings back some of the better memories. Forgetting the bad.

    Good thread,
    Peace

This is very logical because ie. Nicotine works via the Sympathicus
(this is a part of the vegetative Nerve-System)

The Body change into a "Alarmed Mode" with a increase of the Heartbeat,
    and a release of (Stress-)Transmitter,
together with the Withdrawal Mode a very bad Combination comes into being!

I guess we can say the same for Caffeine and Teeine!

To sit on a Couch, trink Coffee and smoke one Cigarette after the other
    should be clearly avoided :)
