Swim's being referred to pain management for a back injury. Swim is on a sea of medications for various things, some of these medications are effexor XR, adderall XR, gabapentin (for nerve pain). Swim's dr's office ran a random drug screen so they could send Swim to temporarily see a pharmactist @ the disease management clinic for pain meds (this is @ an army hospital, and swim has to see a civillian pain management doc) during the time it takes for the insurance to process the pain managemt referral & actual appointment time. Swim's had an appointment the next day and was informed that she came up positive for amphetamines, benzo's, and PCP! The amphetamines were obvious, but SWIM was confused about the other 2. The pharmacist swim saw said the effexor can cause a positive for PCP, but swim is still confused about the benzo positive. Swim can't remember taking any benzos. Swim had 1 valium but that was 1-2 weeks ago. The lab sent the sample off for further testing, but swim wants to know if I'm going to be in an assfuckton it of trouble for taking a valium, or if gabapentin actually is a benzo and causes a positive on a drug test? They're slow and gave swim shit about the amphetamines because they forgot the behavioral health doc prescribes it (they can see everything that happens @ the hospital, including behavioral health, ER visits, any outside prescriptions filled @ the pharmacy, etx on their computer). And, they didn't know effexor could cause a positive for PCP & actually gave swim shit about doing PCP. So, swim doesn't put it passed them to not realize/or forget that gabapentin is a benzo if it is. Thanks for any help.

If they run it through GC/MS, they'll get to the bottom of SWIY's drug test and unfavourable results.

Diazepam (and its metabolites, desmethyldiazepam, 1-hydroxydiazepam (aka temazepam), etc.) can (and do) remain in the body for weeks. Depends on the sensitivity of the test. Diazepam is relatively low-potency, so it shows up relatively easy in very sensitive tests that are sensitive enough to pick up high-potency benzos such as alprazolam and triazolam.

Diazepam's half life is what, 2 days? So if SWIY took 10mg of diazepam, after 2 days, there would be 5mg, after 4 days, 2.5mg, after 6 days, 1.25mg, after 8 days, 0.675mg, after 10 days, 0.375mg, etc.

The most sensitive tests can at least detect triazolam 0.125mg, so on the most sensitive tests, they can figure out that SWIY taken a benzo for at least 2-3 weeks afterwards.

swim took a 5mg valium that was prescribed for an mri when swim had an anxiety attack and was out of xanex. So, that lie swim told about taking leftover xanex is going to be figured out then? Uh oh.

If they really want to nail SWIY, and have access to the latest/great in analytical equipment and techniques/processes, then, yes, they can distinguish between diazepam metabolites and alprazolam metabolites.

Probably fairly unlikely. SWIY just tests positive for benzos, offers a plausible explanation, and things are left at that.

Effexor does indeed frequently cause a positive for PCP. Valium can and often does show up for up to three weeks after use. So that would explain your results.

I would not expect Gabapentin to cross react on a benzodiazepine immunoassay and cause a false positive result.

It definitely would not confirm positive utilizing a mass spectrometry-based assay.
