I have taken Adderall in a recreational setting in the past, and has recently learned that he will be prescribed Ritalin starting in January (his physician has prescribed other medications, and wants to prescribe the Ritalin afterwards). SWIM always felt that Adderall not only helped him with his attention issues, but also was an incredible drug for purely hedonistic pursuits.

I have never tried Ritalin, and is wondering where You would guess Ritalin will fall. SWIM truly wants to treat his attention problems, and feels that Ritalin being different from Adderall might keep it from being a drug of pleasure. What does You think?

I have been prescribed Adderall (IR) for the past 4 years.

    40mg -- 20mg 2x/day

Three of the finest qualities I have enjoyed are No Tolerance (at least not for him), Mildly Addicting (nearly entirely psychological), and virtually No Dependency concerns.

I take the same amount daily, and has not had any problems with it.

Back on topic, Adderall crushes Ritalin. Every single time.

I had a friend who has adhd and asperger syndrome and gets 60 20mg focalin xr pills a month. my friend doesnt like them (makes him drowsy) so hes been giving them to swim for the last 2 years and I can say that focalin is the best drug I has ever taken. I have had a couple of adderall here and there but finds it too be a bit to twitchy. Everyone bitches about the awful comedown from methylphenidate but adderall has the same problem it just takes longer to come down. If I am having a bad comedown he justs takes another focalin.
My friend is being changed to vyvanse (similar to adderall) next month so swims focalin days are coming to an end but it was one hell of a ride !!

I hope everyone will stop dissin the ritalin :crazy
    PEACE

My chimp prefers Ritalin. Very under-rated and it gets a bad rap for being highly considered a "kiddydrug" compared to amphetamines throughout history. However my chimp finds that adderall is way more variable and influenced by mood while ritalin does its job and does it the same way every time. Often with phetamines my chimp feels buzzed for ten minutes then gets pissed off randomly...with ritalin my chimp feels happy and buzzed no matter what (if a bit more jittery than addy but whatever, u take a stim deal with it haha). Amphetamines also come in, my chimp finds, smaller prescribed doses than ritalin...they will run out way faster than Vitamin R. Amphetamines also go past horny into sexually obsessive. Writing a paper on phets is fine till you realize your browser is a click away, but my chimp finds that with ritalin, obsession, while there like with any stimulant, is way more fleeting and short-lived, allowing for refocus when it seems impossible on addy. Comedowns aren't a factor because they should barely exist if you take care of yourself during the high.

aridchimp added 5 Minutes and 31 Seconds later...

Others have made this point as well but it needs mentioning. My chimp can fall asleep easily when stimming on ritalin but with addy, no such luck

Wow! I have way to much time on his hands, obviously having nothing to do other then talk about his obvious obssesion with stimulants. I can almost positively say that if u even do suffer from add/ADHD it's not a severe form. If it was you'd appreciate the effects of a stimulant and the difference it makes in your life rather then just appretiating how high it makes u feel. and therefore completely missusing the drug. It's drug seekers like u, which often make themselves feel better about taking the drug by saying and even to the point of believing, that they "need" it for add/ADHD, that make getting a prescription very difficult. Most of these individuals never thought or worried about having add until they learned about the stimulants they could get in result of such a condition. I understant that stimulants can be addictive but bragging about this is just plain pathetic. Your obviously covering up a mental illness such as depression. U can't deal with your issues so u must remain high inorder to avoid these feelings.

This is a topic comparing one drug to another (as opposed to the conditions they're used for) the OP wasn't really inappropriate in their comments. Sometimes bluntness is needed, we all need "tough love" at times, but never forget that after the word "tough" comes the word "love."

Apologies, but Sparkles has to say that sometimes "issues" even known ones, are not as easily dealt with as "right, this is the problem, so this is the answer, I'm gonna do that, and that's it."

Sometimes denial, and all the other defense mechanisms, are used because people are fearful of looking at the core issues. It's never black and white, there are so many colours in between. There's a huge difference between awareness and ability to act on it.

You're correct in as much as drug use and addiction are merely symptoms of an underlying problem. But once addicted, this brings it's own problems. Sometimes advice/support is more acceptable, and will be acted upon, if it's given with a little sweetener. And no one at DF is qualified to diagnose anyone, that's the job of a medical practitioner, not DF posters.

I had abused both in the past, snorting or taking high doses both in combo w/ alcohol and other drugs to party, and during school or studying to help with that. ironically enough, she got to a point, once quitting abusing drugs, that she has needed them via prescription for a medical condition (related to narcolepsy, to stay awake) and then realized she hated the feeling of strong uppers and it contributed to her anxiety, so while prescribed them it was always low-dose/oral.. but speaking from her past/recreationally, i think that she would have to say she preferred adderall (amphetamine) to ritalin (methylphenidate) since she would have more side effects from the ritalin.. both were fairly euphoric and helped with wakefulness and give a buzz, but for partying or snorting/higher doses/etc. she found adderall "smoother" and could take more without getting a headache, nausea, anxiety.. but for schoolwork etc. I agree with an above poster that methylphen (rit) is a bit more predictable and at lower doses taken as prescribed/orally, sometimes better for getting things done and not getting overly distracted, as well as being able to sleep when the time comes.

Adderall makes me feel 100x better. Rits/concerta just gives him the jitters. I would say that compairing rit to addy is like compairing wacking off to getting a blowjob.

I have only ever tried Ritalin, and not Adderall, but he found the experience to be quite unpleasant. The initial rush was nice, but the comedown comes very quickly for me and it is extremely unpleasant, with extremely depressing thoughts, and just wanting the whole thing to end.

On the plus side, I have combined Cannabis with the Ritalin come-down and found it a very euphoric and positive experience. He has never tried MDMA, however from experiences he has read/heard about, his Cannabis/Ritalin combo experience seemed very similar to it.

My tree has never tried amphetamine, but methylphenidate is a very enjoyable drug, even at sub-therapeutic doses. He is prescribed 12.5mg three times per day, but when taking less than that in the form of 2.5mg to 5mg per hour, he experiences mild euphoria, empathogenic effects, sociability, reduced fatigue and increased concentration.

Taking higher doses in one go or combining it with ethanol usually brings on negative side-effects, including a painful comedown and then a hangover, but those circumstances are easy to avoid.

I think many of the negative perceptions of methylphenidate are psychological: if you believe it is inferior to amphetamine, it will be.

I was a long-time Adderall user in the past, but he stopped about 3 years ago and got into opiates instead. He hadn't touched a stimulant (besides caffeine) for those 3 years, until a few days ago, he procured a large amount of Ritalin, which he has been using now for the last few days.

Obviously the Ritalin and SWIM are still on their "honeymoon period", SWIM guesses, but I am loving the Ritalin. I had just really been stuck in a rut taking so many opiates.... so sleepy, no drive to get up and work hard.... the Ritalin has been really uplifting, and I am finally able to start enjoying his work again, etc.

That said, of course Adderall is stronger, lasts longer, etc. But there are reasons that SWIM quit taking Adderall years ago... too many stomach-aches, headache, etc. Too much not eating, not sleeping. And, on Adderall, I am just OUT OF HIS MIND. Like crazy, one idea after the next... can be very inspiring, but ultimately very tiring... not actually good for just focusing and getting some work done. On Adderall, SWIM might start working, but then get so excited about something else and spend hours and hours doing that something which is completely random but seems so fun and stimulating at the time, ultimately not really producing any work.

The Ritalin, on the other hand, granted it is a new drug for SWIM, is much more functional, yet still euphoric. It is not blowing SWIM's mind away like Adderall would. I am just more awake, more motivated, LESS BORED, getting lots of work done, and just plain feeling SATISFIED. And this is a step up from something like Provigil (modafinil) too -- there really is a true euphoria with Ritalin. The difference is that with Ritalin, it is just euphoria -- not euphoria accompanied by MANIA, like with Adderall.

I have a bit of storting the Ritalin too, and finds, as others have noted, that it is very similar to snorting weak coke. But I will likely take most of his pills orally, just for the functionality of it. A little bump up the nose now and then will be fun though.

Another positive effect of the Ritalin is that I am needing far fewer Vicodin or other pain pills to get though the day. Could be a synergistic thing, maybe the Ritalin is just distracting him from the pain, who knows... but good things are happening.

SWIM only tried ritalin but there is a hypothesis that adult adhd brains (that have gone without treatment) lack enhancement from ritalin compared to amphetamine.i.e the reuptake inhibition of MPH is there but its still limited by the same brain structure with dopamine dysfunction. Such a brain may differ from ADHDer to another. As amphetamine increases dopamine release whereas MPH increased reupake inhibition, amphetamine is generally more effective where dopamine dysfunction is concerned because it 'fixes' things from more than one area.

AMP = reuptake inhibition + release
MPH = mostly just reuptake inihibiton

I would still take MPH aka ritalin over nothing at all - but the thing he notices with ritalin is that while it improves his ability to stay in control of life and a job etc, it stifles his personality and creativity which were really his positives to begin with. Sometimes he hates it and sometmes he sees its benefits and how he has progressed in comparison to without treatment

I have tried both, about twice for each. I tried the 20 mg Ritalin and had a nice euphoric feeling for about 2 hours. SWIM then tried 20mg Adderral ER and felt unmotivated and weird. I did not feel sociable and was not hungry as well.

I am also known to like Coke over Meth any day. Probably the best comparison is Ritalin = Coke, Adderral = Meth.

SWIM prefers Adderall orally. He prefers the peak of the experience of insufflating Ritalin slightly more, but it only lasts 15 minutes or so, after which Adderall is better still.

AFOAF has tried both Ritalin and Adderall along with Dextroamphetamine and Crack. The only stimulants out of these that have ever given AFOAF euphoria were Ritalin and Crack, AFOAF's never felt any euphoria off of Adderall or Dextroamphetamine. AFOAF dosn't know what that say's about his brain chemistry.

You sound like me talking about adderall. The only time i really enjoy it, is the first day or 2 when i get my script. After that it just makes me want to be by myself and read all day. I have to take at least 90mg to have it do anything and anymore than 150 mg is just a waste

We don't get adderall in Australia, we get dexies instead.. I actually just posted up my experiences with both dexies and ritalin.. If you don't want to read it (and I wouldn't blame you I unintentionally made it a bit long). The summary is pretty much that I prefer Ritalin in every way..recreationally, for studying, for motivation and productivity. I also have terrible comedowns from dexies, while barely anything from ritalin. In my opinion it's better in every way.
